Video licences

Are you wondering if you can use a certain video, or if you can even modify it? To clarify this, there are Creative Commons. Creative Commons are the standard licences whereby the author does not ask for any money for the use of the materials and contacting the author for this use is therefore not necessary. However, the creator of the materials may specify, based on the licence that is chosen, what one may or may not do with these materials:

  • CC BY: This element is (usually) present in all types of licenses and obligates you to attribute the author’s name.
  • CC BY – SA: Attribution of the author’s name + you may edit the materials if you share the edited material under the same license.
  • CC BY – ND: Attribution of the author’s name+ you may not adapt the materials (i.e. you may not omit or add anything).
  • CC BY – NC: Attribution of the author’s name+ you may not use the materials commercially. This means that you may not earn money by using the materials with this licence.
  • CC BY – NC – SA: Attribution of the author’s name+ non-commercial use + you may edit the materials provided if you use the same licence.
  • CC BY – NC – ND: Attribution of the author’s name+ non-commercial use + you may not adapt the materials.
  • CC0: The author completely releases his/her copyright, which means that not even an Attribution of the author’s name is applicable.
